SAILS....Engine Room
|
The Engine Room
hides beneath the Main Salon and is sound proofed with lead acoustic
blankets and thick walls. Access is through doors in the
Laundry Room. This is a large space for easy access to both main engines
and the generator. Mechanics have no difficulty reaching any part of
the diesels. As in the Laundry Room, the bilge has been maintained
meticulously "dry" it's entire life. The stuffing boxes
have been housed in small Rubbermaid bins with a dedicated bilge pump so
that no water escapes into the bilge proper. As a result of this dry
air conditioned environment, the engines look "new". The water pumps
were replaced on all three diesels in 2005, the heat exchangers and after
coolers in 2004, and all hoses were replaced in 2003. Engine mounts
have been frequently replaced through the years. The power head (all
the coils and contacts that create the AC current) in the generator was
replaced in 2004. The Raycor fuel filters were upgraded to flame
bowls late in 2005. The pillow block bearings were replaced in 2004
and the cutlass bearings in 2005. And all filters and oil have been
changed every 100 hours. There is an oil exchange pump that
makes changing oil a snap. The 40 HP hydraulic pump was added in
2004 for the windlasses, however the installation was chosen to be large
enough to power a bow thruster if one is added in the future;
everything is in place for a hydraulic thruster except the thruster
itself.
